Marquis Hawkes Cabrini Green

Man, what is going on in that basement? After doing an Old Boy-style hammer number on us with Jared Wilson's sick and serious sell-out E.P, the dirty DABJ duo are back to bring us some more thunderous House biz with a 4 tracker from mysterio newcomer Marquis Hawkes. Even though the test pressings are still hot to touch, plaudits have been piling up for this from no less than Ron Morelli, TLR, Bernardi, Untold, A Made Up Sound and Laurent Garnier to name but a few. The "Cabrini Green" EP kicks of with some hard edged material that goes by the name of "Housing Project", riding a mid-90's Bizz O.D kick into the eye of a funk storm. Downing the tempo a notch but never renouncing the groove, "Marvin" runs with some creepoid Gerald Donald manouvuers, a bassline that would make Chip-E call it a motherfuckin day and a repetitive strain injury groove that will leave ye in a neck brace from all that head-nodding, son. They say staying active is the best remedy for that ailment though, and luckily for your crippled ass "Teetotal Acid" will have you back on a steady schedule of poplocking nonstopping to the brink of yawning. I've heard more than a few people tell me that the sound of Acid is played out. Those folk need a special colony island where they can live out their acid-free lives away from the rest of us. Tracks like this prove there's enough juice in that machine to last us another 100+ years. The last cut on this EP, "Sealion Women", is one of those tracks you're gonna hear many times before you even know what it is. DABJ are even considering printing up a run of "Sealion Woman" t-shirts for DJ's, so that when they drop it they won't have to deal with teams of rushing punters wanting to know the name of this Traxmen meets John Lee Hooker stomper. Only two releases in and Dixon Avenue Basement Jams are kicking dicks to the dirt and cementing themselves as an authority in underground grit. And to be fair, would a guy with a name like Marquis Hawkes ever make anything less than a badass record?
