Andrew Duke has been building his reputation as a purveyor of all things hi tech funk for over a decade. The Canadian has been designing sounds and creating exciting rhythms under his own name and via the moniker Cognition Audio Works. Duke doesnt simply make techno, he creates soundscapes, ads, movie soundtracks and all manner of things that require quirky, emotive and sometimes spacey sounds. It is worth nothing that Duke is also an accomplished DJ and reknowned blogger with plenty to say. Importantly plenty more people listen.
Geisha is Duke's second outing on Nice & Nasty and follows up the lovely Maiko and continues with Duke's respect and fascination with Japanese culture.
Duke's resume is impressive with over 10 releases on his own imprint Cognition Audio Works and other projects with Static Recordings, Dublin Xpress Recordings, Open Concept, Blaq, Phoniq and various others. His prolific remix output is only matched by his quality and various high profile reviews and support from the world's leading DJs. Duke has remixed Itokim, Mick Chillage, Tomi Chair and been remixed by Joe Babylon, Jay Riordan and Mick Chillage to name a few.
The original of Geisha is kept of this project for a later date; however, Nice & Nasty are delighted to offer what is an outstanding array of remix talent. Geisha has been remixed by: Detroit's Claue Young, K Hand and Terrence Dixon; Canada's Steve Sim aka Steb Sly (Metamorphic) and a deep dub from Terrace.
Claude Young needs little introduction. The Detroit legend is now based in Tokyo - apt for this project - and over the past two decades been at the forefront of techno music making. Terrence Dixon, another Detroit pioneer is part of Nice & Nasty whilst K Hand aka Keli Hand of Acacia records appears on Nice & Nasty for the first time. Young, Dixon and Hand add a certain gravitas to the release and label boss Desy Balmer has went on record to claim Dixon's remix as his best work to date.
Duke's sound varies from Detroit techno to minimal and like the afforementioned Dixon and Young may have create Detroit Minimal techno with Geisha.
Deep, minimal, Relentless grooves with a subtle melody running through it, plenty of funk and loads of layers and FX for the mind and the feet to enjoy. Will it be everyones' cup of tea? probably not. Will it be the purist's cup of tea? possibly. will it be your cup of tea? we hope so.
This music is crafted with music in mind by a sound architect. It is techno. Nothing mor eor less, just techno. Enjoy!
